Nordstär Duo

Nordstar Duo

About the Ensemble: Nordstär Duo consists of Renee Vaughan on nyckelharpa and Laura MacKenzie playing both the säckpipa (a Swedish bagpipe) and the wooden flute. Together, they share a passion for traditional Swedish folk music and its unique instruments. In their Class Notes Concert, they invite students to explore how traditional folk music connects with their own heritage, community, and sense of belonging.

Program Description: Nordstär Duo’s Class Notes program will explore the evolution of music, dance, and storytelling from classical Baroque to traditional Nordic folk music, with a focus on the unique instruments and cultural contexts that shape this tradition.

Students will learn about and identify by sight and sound several traditional Swedish instruments, including the nyckelharpa, the säckpipa, and the wooden flute. Students will also experience dance form and storytelling through music.

Finally, students will also understand how music and storytelling are linked to cultural identity, history, and community, fostering a greater appreciation for traditional music’s role in shaping and reflecting community.
